Who we are

Play On Music Studio was founded by Matthew Mothersole with a vision for creating together.
Play On's mission is to inspire and ignite self-motivation within as many students as possible towards developing musical skills to their fullest potential. We value individuality and therefore wish to instruct each student from within the family context whenever possible. This approach helps maintain a comfortable learning environment for both the mentor and the student while getting support from the student's family. We provide top-quality instruction at affordable rates that make music training more accessible to the general public.

Matthew's Biography

Matthew playing his violin

Matthew began playing the violin under the teaching and direction of Elisabeth Szojka at the Royal Conservatory of Music (R.C.M.) at Mount Royal University. He completed R.C.M. grades Preliminary through to seven under Ms. Szojka's instruction and completed R.C.M. Preliminary theory through to grade two under Sandra Page's instruction.

Over the years, Matthew fell in love with orchestral performance and it remains one of his greatest passions today. His performance experience includes playing first, second, and third violinist in several Mount Royal University orchestras. While enrolled in the Performing and Visual Arts program (P.V.A.) at Central Memorial Highschool, he played in the String Program, String Quartets, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band, while studying Music, Harmony, and History. In 2007, Matthew attended the University of Lethbridge for the Bachelor of Music Program. He studied Music History, Harmony and Counterpoint, Musicianship, and Personal Music Performance. He also held the 2nd chair in the University Chamber Orchestra. Since his post-secondary education, Matthew has trained under well-known conductors here in Calgary.

Recently, the most exciting development in Matthew's career is an opportunity to study under Johannes Meyer, renowned European orchestral violinist, who is now a close mentor of Matthew. He also studied under several other world renowned concert violinists and pianists and had Master classes where he was instructed by many distinguished musicians.
Matthew, himself, developed as an instructor over the past several years. He has gained extensive experience working with students, maintaining 10-60 pupils at a time with an 85-90% retention rate.
